1The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying:2Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call to it the proclamation that I spoke to you.3Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Nineveh was a great city to God, a three-day walk.4And Jonah began to enter the city, a day's walk, and he called and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overturned."5The men of Nineveh believed in God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloths, from their great ones to their little ones.6The word came to the king of Nineveh. And he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.7And he cried out and said, in Nineveh, by the decree of the king and his great ones, saying: Humanity and beast, cattle and flock, shall not taste anything; they shall not graze, and they shall not drink water.8And they covered themselves with sackcloth, both man and beast. And they called to God earnestly, and they turned each from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands.9"Who knows? God might return and relent, and turn from the heat of his anger, and we might not perish."10And God saw their deeds, that they had turned back from their evil way, and God relented concerning the evil that he had spoken to do to them, and he did not do it.
